UEM Builders completes bridge approach 106 days early

KUALA LUMPUR: UEM Builders Bhd has achieved another milestone when it completed the installation of final approach span for the Second Penang Bridge 106 days ahead of schedule.

This has allowed construction vehicles from the land connection at Batu Kawan to commute to the main navigation span of the bridge towards Batu Maung.

Ultimately, construction vehicles will be able to get across the bridge from one end to another for a total distance of 16.9km upon completion of the main navigation span scheduled in April 2013.

“We have a good team of experienced engineers and professionals,” UEM Builders managing director Mohd Razin Ghazali said.

He said one of the major components of the construction of the Second Penang Bridge is the precast Segmental Box Guiders (SBG).

They were produced at UEM Builders’ project site casting yard factory.

UEM Builders Bhd was awarded a contract to design, construct and complete primary structure comprising of 578 bridge spans with a total of 8,092 SBGs at an average weight of between 60 and 100 tonnes each.

The 24km-long Second Penang Bridge will not only become the longest bridge in Southeast Asia, but the first seismic bridge in the world.
